The Union County Democratic Party is sponsoring a petition to urge the Union County Public School (UCPS) Board to adopt and implement the four unanimous recommendations presented to the board in March 2021 by the Citizens’ Advisory Committee on Diversity (CAC-D). Over the course of the year, numerous racial incidents have been reported at UCPS including a teacher using the n-word, a student assignment that displayed racist hashtags on the bulletin board and social media groups with disturbing shared experiences by students of color. It was incidents similar to these that prompted the UCPS Board to initiate the CAC-D in September of 2020. According to the UCPS website, “the CAC-D was created to serve as a forum to address conversations about diversity and promote a school community that embraces acceptance, denounces, and takes action against prejudice and discrimination.” The CAC-D consisted of students, teachers, parents, principals, and faith community members. Please join us in urging the school board to accept these recommendations.
- Improve student experiences through interventions and courageous conversations.
- Hire a Chief Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Officer, create an Office of Equity and implement comprehensive diversity training.
- Drive systemic change and address policy through equitable lenses.
- Address resource distribution inequities between school clusters.
